In recent years, breakthrough has been made in the research area:

The annual funding for scientific research of the school has reached 10 million yuan. Particularly, the funding exceeded 120 million yuan in 2019. Two National Key Research and Development Programs, "High-speed Optical Transmission Technology and System Verification Based on New Band, New Optical Fiber and New Amplification" and "RF Front-End System Technology Based on Third-Generation Compound Semiconductor", have been approved. A total of 30 projects have been established under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and breakthroughs have been made in the "National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth", "National Major Scientific Research Instrument Development Project", "International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Project" and "Joint Fund".

More than 525 papers have been published, including 8 highly cited papers and 97 high-level papers in the second ranking journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or above. The total number of authorized invention patents reached 182. The school also won 3 second prizes of Guangdong Province Science and Technology Award.

The School of Information has successively established 3 engineering technology research centers of Guangdong Province, which include "Bionic Olfactory Engineering Technology Research Center of Guangdong Province", "Communication Technology and the Specific Core Chip Engineering Technology Research Center of Guangdong Province", "Brain-Like Computing and Deep Learning Engineering Research and Development Center of Guangdong Province". Most importantly, the school also established one key laboratory of Guangdong Province, which is “Photonics Technology Key Laboratory of Guangdong Province”.
